Overlooked is your weekly horological treasure hunt — where we dig through the vaults of European Watch Company to spotlight a few quietly brilliant pieces hiding in plain sight. It’s the sleeper hit, the underdog, the “wait, how is this still available?” watch you didn’t know you needed… until now.

Golden Hour, sometimes referred to as the magic hour, is the brief period just before sunset or just after sunrise, when the soft haze of diffused sunlight casts a soft, golden glow over the landscape. We’ve found four timepieces in varying shades of gold that evoke the warm light of those magical moments of the day.

Omega 145.0052 Speedmaster Professional Jubilee

It’s often said that watch collectors should own at least one Speedmaster at some point in their collecting journey. This version, a special edition from 2014 in a 42mm solid 18K yellow gold case, is worthy of a place in any collector’s watch box. Its black dial is punctuated by gold edging and luminous gold hands and indices, giving a luxe look to the solid timekeeping of its in-house Caliber 863 manually-wound movement.

Rolex Day Date 40MM 228239 President

Sparkling with baguette-cut diamond dial markers, this Rolex Day-Date offers subtle shimmer while giving a very legible and practical view into the functions in its name, the day and the date. The 40mm case, with its signature fluted bezel, and signature President bracelet are rendered in 18K white gold, giving it a nice heft and presence on the wrist. The movement is Rolex’s in-house automatic calibre 3255, which has resistance to both magnetism and shocks and boasts a lengthy 70-hour power reserve. In like-new condition with box and papers, this piece will shine in any light.

Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Contemporaine

For those with a preference of gold that’s a little more rosy in an elegant silhouette, this Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Contemporaine will fit the bill. The 40mm 18K rose gold case is very slim at only 6.7mm thick, making it easy to slip under even the most tailored cuff. The understated silvery-white dial has 18K gold hands and indices to match the rosy hue of the case. It’s powered by the manually-wound in-house caliber 1400VC, with a 40-hour power reserve, and comes in like-new condition with its original box.

Breguet 5357BA Tourbillon Grand Complication

When thinking of the light during the golden hour, one might think of this Breguet Tourbillon Grand Complication. It starts with its 39mm 18K yellow gold case, complemented by hand-engraved guilloche dial with its classic Breguet offset hour-and-minute subdial at the twelve o’clock position, and continues with a visible pop of gold from the exposed tourbillon at the 6 o’clock position. But the exhibition caseback, showing the hand-engraved plate of the in-house, manually-wound Caliber 558.2, really steals the show and demonstrates Breguet’s unique mastery of artistry. It’s a feast for the eyes and a horological masterpiece.

The subtleties of the play of light at the beginning and end of each day are something to enjoy, whether it’s by enjoying a cup of coffee as the day breaks or taking a long walk at sunset. That light is often ideal for photography, and we think the golden hour would be a perfect time to take a photo of one of these pieces on your wrist.
